W517 Baseball Card Original Art (3)
Trio from the rare 54-card W517 set of 1931, one of the toughest to find in top condition. The "W" indicates that the cards were issued in strips, which was common in the 1920s and 1930s, but unlike many strip cards of the day these sets contained b&w photographs (sometimes sepia toned, as here), not drawings. Card #s are printed in circles beside the images. Over 30 HOFers in the set, including the 3 here: Hack Wilson (#42), Earl Averill (#51) and Ted Lyons (#45). Wilson & Lyons cards are VG-EX, Averill VG w/small holes on the top center and bottom center. Cards come with the original art sent to the printer, and both versions are mounted for each player in a handsome gray-backed display. The Wilson photo is slightly mottled.
