Willie Mays 1954-55 Santurce Contract
Unsigned Willie Mays 1954-55 contract with Santurce of the Puerto Rican League paired him in the outfield with Robert Clemente. Mays needed the off-season practice after missing most of the 1952 season and all of 1953 because of military duty, but was paid handsomely -- $1,000 a month. Cigarette burn at bottom left and minor staining on the 8 1/2 by 11-inch white document are among forgivable blemishes. Language detailing alliance between Caribbean leagues and Major League Baseball reflects growing trend of the time. Contract has extra pages and codicils making it far more interesting than the usual unsigned contract. His name is typed in (vintage) where the signature should be.
