Willie Mays 1954 William Mullin Original Art

Willie Mays 1954 William Mullin Original Art

Here is an original pen and ink drawing by William Mullin, possibly for Sporting News subject matter, shows Willie Mays receiving the Sid Mercer Award for "Player of the Year" at the New York Baseball Writers Association. The artwork is a tribute to Mays, juxtaposing him with past recipient Bill Dickey and to a lesser extent Dizzy Dean. Comparisons state Mays won it in his first full season whereas Dickey got it in his last season when he was considerably older at the end of his career. Willie Mays receives the award at the young age of 23, Bill Dickey was 36 in 1943, and Dizzy was four months older in 1934. The last statement is a question; "How many more will he have by 1967?" Measures 17x23" and is in EX-MT condition.
