Record-Setting 1907 Cobb Rookie

Tucked in with some far less notable issues in the collection of a long-time hobbyist, a 1907 Ty Cobb Wolverine News rookie card sold for a record price of $15,352 in the Lelands.com Monthly Auction Sunday night.

The 1907 Ty Cobb Wolverine News rookie card is one of the few known specimens of an issue that dates to the earliest days of Cobb’s playing career – and is considered by many to be Cobb’s true rookie card along with other postcard and tobacco card issues.

None had sold publicly in the last few years but prior sales range from $3,000 – $10,000.

“We were impressed with the price as it shatters the previous records including ones in far better condition,” said Lelands chairman and founder Josh Evans. “The best part about this is that it was an old time collector find. I was at the person’s house going through a stack of old baseball postcards and came across it in the pile. It was like an electric shock going through my body. I pulled it from the pile, held it up to him and said, ‘Do you know what this is?”

The Cobb card was the top selling item in the Lelands Monthly auction which also included a lot of 13 Mickey Mantle Exhibit cards that soared to nearly $7,000, a hoard of more than 100 1970 Topps Scratch-Off insert sets that went for nearly $4,000 and a program from the first night game in MLB history which ended at $2,216.
