1851 "Fat Man" Identified Daguerrotype

Resplendent quarter plate portrait of John Anson Peckham Fisk (1836-98), the highly respected NYC restaurateur and President of the famed "Fat Men's Club." Shown here at the age of 15, the brass matte reads, "John A.P. Fisk Aged 15 - weight 260 pounds." Immortalized in an 1894 NY Times article upon the failure of his Broad Street restaurant after 50 years in business, it stated, "Everyone in the downtown section knew Mr. Fisk." He had to reach the weight of 295 lbs. to enter this 3rd generation family business stocked with giant men, and he weighed 500 pounds at the time of the article. Members had to weigh over 200. Previously sold in a Christie's auction for $4,000.
