1860s Robert E. Lee "Presidential" Signature (PSA)

1860s Robert E. Lee "Presidential" Signature (PSA)

Ironically, this signature from American and Confederate soldier Robert E. Lee is taken from a document he signed as "President" of Washington College, which later became Washington and Lee University. He transformed the small, not particularly distinguished Latin academy into a forward-looking institution of higher education, seeking refuge there during the aftershock of the U.S. Civil War. The signature is beautifully slabbed by PSA/DNA authentic. In 1865, after the war, Lee was paroled and signed an oath of allegiance, asking to have his citizenship of the United States restored. Lee's application was misplaced; as a result, he did not receive a pardon and his citizenship was not restored.
