1880s Jake Kilrain Vs. Jem Smith "Woolie"
Unbelievably rare vintage "woolie", or image woven from wool, from bare-knuckle boxing great Jake Kilrain's December 19, 1887 championship bout with English champ Jem Smith on an island in the River Siene near Dieppe, France. In a bone-chilling drizzle Kilrain and Smith battled for 106 rounds and nearly three hours, viewed by exactly seventy-nine spectators who paid upwards from $200 each. Seventy-four of the specatators were English, and thus backers of Smith, among them the Marquis of Queensberry. In round 106, Kilrain knocked Smith down but before the fight could be declared a victory for Kilrain the crowd forced the referee to call a draw due to darkness. The woolie shows the two men sizing each other up, their country's flags behind them. 16 x 20" image is in perfect condition, mounted under glass in a beautiful wood frame with an inner gold border.
