1880s L.C. Dole & Co. Bat Used by Samuel M. Chase

Displayed is a bat that sports a paper label using the appellation "memorabilia," the earliest known use of the term we have seen. This rare L.C. Dole & Co. bat was used By Samuel M. Chase, a Yale university student, Class of 1883, who played on Yale's baseball team in the early 1800s. The bat is 35.5" long and it weighs 30.1 ounces. The bat exhibits a visually pleasing light finish, with a contrasting dark painted center section and decorative dark rings. The trademark gold stenciling is very complete with minimal loss or fading. The bat shows great use, with some paint loss, very minor wood chipping, some very small stains, and ball marks. One end of the bat has a handwritten paper label that describes the game in which this bat was used. The label has a few partial tears and some blurring of ink. It appears to read, "Game between H____ to be kept as memorabilia...1885...Bat with which SMC made two single base hits in succession off the professional Murray who once played with the Keystones of New Jersey." This approximately 140-year-old terrific bat has an even better backstory. This wonderful bat comes from a relatively recent discovery of a collection of bats used by Samuel M. Chase. Three of his bats bear paper labels with the word "memorabilia," the earliest use of the word that we have ever seen.
