1890 Players' League Advertising Sign and Guide Book

1890 Players' League Advertising Sign and Guide Book

Long before the advent of players' unions and work stoppages, team owners ruled the roost and players didn't always see eye-to-eye regarding their treatment. Such was the impetus of the formation of the "Players' League" in 1890, as a counterpart to the National League and the American Association. While the league only lasted for that one season, it served its purpose in making changes to the sport which exist to this day, such as the implementation of the "infield fly" rule. This 128-page guide is rarer than hen's teeth and the 11x13" card stock ad is the only one known. Eight teams participated in the lone season, with most in major markets and several having counterparts in the other leagues, culminating with the Boston Reds finishing in first place. While the league was deemed to be a "minor league" decades later, the Players League is still considered one of the turning points in the history of the sport of professional baseball as it is known today. The in-store advertising sign is heavy stock with a grommet at the top for hanging. There is some foxing and water marks around the edges but other than that, it is beautiful with no rips or creases. The guide is a bit tattered with loose pages and a couple missing toward the back, and chipping around the edges.
