1891-92 Winnipeg Victorias Hockey Club Championship Cup

1891-92 Winnipeg Victorias Hockey Club Championship Cup

While the earliest history of hockey in Canada is uncertain, one thing’s for sure: the love affair between the country and one of the fastest, roughest sports around is one hundred percent clear. Here’s an opportunity to grab hold of an historic page from hockey’s early years. There’s an included magazine page that shows the well-posed Victoria Hockey Team when they became champions of Manitoba and Northwest Territories back in 1892-93. The Championship Cup was awarded to the team and over one hundred years later, it is now being offered to a serious hockey fan. The fact is, this is without a doubt, one of the finest hockey trophies we have ever handled. Notice the detail. Three crossed hockey sticks on a silver base with a puck in the center, the championship award measures 9 1/2” high. The cup is supported at the top by the sticks (one stick is loose at the base). The engraving reads as follows: “Manitoba Hockey Association, 1892 Championship Cup, presented by T-A-Anderson, Won by Victoria Hockey Club 1891-92, J.C.G. Armytage, Capt.” In addition, a fine engraving of a hockey player is on the other side of the cup surrounded by a wreath of engraved maple leaves. All of the players’ names are also engraved on the cup. Following this victory, The Victorias went on to win the Stanley Cup in 1896. The nucleus of this team, Botlam, Armytage, Howard and Whitey Merritt would go to Montreal in 1896 and challenge for the Stanley Cup (an amateur trophy in those days). Merritt is attributed to be the first great net minder in hockey history, and was credited for introducing the goalie stick to hockey. And the 2005 winner of the ultra-rare 1891-92 Victoria Hockey Team Championship Cup is...you!
