1897 James J. Corbett vs. Robert Fitzsimmons Program
From the time James J. Corbett won the Heavyweight Title from John L. Sullivan in 1892 he seemed to be on an inevitable course for a meeting in the ring with Robert Fitzsimmons. Fitzsimmons won the World Middleweight Title in 1891. Never a giant of a man, he nevertheless packed a heavy punch and this was clearly evident in his 1st round stoppage of notable heavyweight contender Peter Maher in 1894. It set up a probable fight with Corbett in 1895 and was to be fought in Dallas, but it did not happen. Corbett stayed on the exhibition tour from 1894 to 1897, but finally agreed to a fight with Fitzsimmons. It was held in Carson City on March 17, 1897. Corbett boxed well in the early and middle rounds, but Fitzsimmons kept constant pressure on him. Finally in the 14th Fitzsimmons landed a heavy blow to Corbett’s mid section. It was a crippling blow and Corbett could not continue. Fitzsimmons was the new champion. Presented here is an extremely rare official program from this event. The program has 48 pages which include photographs of the contestants, with biographies, and a scorecard. In fine condition. The program has a tight binding with the original string. It has not been scored. There is a minor cover crease and some very minor wear. This is one of only three known programs and by far the best conditioned example known.
