1900 "Home Baseball Game" by McLouglin Bros.
This large turn-of-the-century baseball board game, titled "Home Base Ball," is notable for its beautifully illustrated cover. The colorful graphics feature an image of a batter and catcher in uniforms of the time, with the game title printed above and below. Manufactured by McLoughlin Bros. and copyrighted in 1900, as noted in print along the base of the cover. It is interesting to note that McLoughlin Bros. used this cover illustration for one of its games as early as 1892, and it was also used for the 1897 version of the "Home Base Ball Game." The bottom of the box, which is framed in wood, serves as the game board and displays an illustration of a baseball diamond. Circles on the board denote each of the nine positions and an attractive crossed bats-and-balls motif decorates two of the corners. The game directions are printed on the interior lid. The game originally came with eighteen wooden discs (nine red and nine gold), which served as the game pieces, and a spinner, but only five of the discs (four gold and one red) remain. The playing board is virtually untouched and looks much like it did when the game was issued. The lid is missing one of its side flaps (two large remnants remain and are included), but the other three are intact, with tears at the corner seams (the missing flap could be restored if so desired). Aside from some wear at the corners, light wrinkles and slight damage at the lower left corner of the top, this example is in better condition than most other games from this era that we have seen. A fine example of this turn-of-the century rarity, which has long been viewed as one of the most attractive baseball games ever produced. Dimensions: 15x15x1".
