1903-04 Portage Lakes Lakers Team Photograph - First Professional Team
In 1904, the Montreal Wanderers, Hockey Champions of Canada, issued a challenge to a hockey team from Portage Lakes, Michigan. The Lakers, Champions of the United States and members in the first professional league, the International League (IHL), accepted the challenge and hosted the visiting Montreal squad on March 21 and 22, 1904. Portage Lakes were declared Champions of the World after easily defeating the Wanderers with scores of 8-4 and 9-2. This large presentation cabinet photo pictures the members of that victorious team in full uniform including Hockey Hall of Famers Riley Hern and Bruce & Hod Stuart. Each member is listed on the matte along with the season schedule and scores up to and including the series with Montreal. Rare and certainly historical. Original photo image measures 10x13" with a matted size of 14x18". In very good to excellent condition.
