1903 Dartmouth Integrated Football Team Photograph
Forty-four years before Jackie Robinson appeared in the uniform of the Brooklyn Dodgers for the first time, a man named Matthew Washington Bullock began an esteemed collegiate football career as end for the powerhouse squad at Dartmouth. He was the first African-American to compete in football at Dartmouth and the second among the Ivies. Following graduation in 1904, Bullock was named the head coach at Massachusetts Agricultural College (now U.Mass), the first black head coach at a predominantly white school. He was named a Walter Camp All-American the year this large and impres-sive photo was snapped. The photograph itself is just spectacular, wonderfully clear and detailed, with "Copyright 1903, Hanover, N.H." inscribed at bottom. Light toning of photo does nothing to detract-many would argue the contrary, that it gives the piece added character. Don't underestimate the importance of this piece. One look and there's no question that you're seeing something special. (17x21" framed)
