1911 American Locomotive Company Bronze Plaque from a Train
Classic bronze "nose" with a dashing No. "57" -- which no doubt signaled the arrival of many a "Midnight Flyer" of the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) back when it shone brightly in 1911 -- recreates not only the romantic history of the American railroad but Mark Twain-like memories of whistling engines chugging down the tracks for all of us boys who never grew up. The 12 1/4" in diameter piece resembling a gigantic copper penny, with "American Locomotive Company, 1911" around the circumference, was attached to the front of the train by the thick metal ingots in the underside. On an historical note, ALCO owned the N.Y. Central, Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads and built the biggest locomotives ever constructed, before ultimately closing in 1969. Bronze piece has held up remarkably well, with little rust or tarnish and a pleasing overall chocolate color.
