1911 Stall & Dean "Nigger Line" Sporting Goods Catalogue
We offer this in dramatic fashion not to offend but to educate; to show the way the world once was. An innocuous 1911 Stall & Dean Spring & Summer Sports catalogue is seemingly inoffensive based on the front cover. When you turn to the back cover, however, that all goes out the window. The small New England sporting goods company started a line of "Base Ball Gloves And Mitts" entitled "The Nigger Line." This referred to the black leather color of the equipment. Founders W.T. Stall & C.H. Dean themselves are pictured in the front of the catalogue, seemingly proud of what they have wrought. Major league players pictured inside add to the wrong. The catalogue has punch holes on the sides and wear throughout, however, this is the only one of these we have handled or seen in our nearly 50 years in the hobby.
