1916 M101-5 Sporting News Blank Back #151 Babe Ruth Rookie (PSA FR 1.5)
This exceptional rarity stands ready to take its place among the most prized possessions in the card collecting hobby. Not only is it the key to the 1916 M101-5 Sporting News set, but a tremendous amount of history is packed within. A very young Babe Ruth is depicted in pitching follow-through from his brief tenure with the Boston Red Sox. This is the Bambino's only recognized rookie card and belongs in the pantheon of most coveted collectibles. While some of these cards had advertising on the back, this is the more "common" blank back version, though even those are extremely scarce. Encapsulated by PSA and graded FR 1.5 largely due to a crease, Babe's image remains spectacular in this seldom-seen pose. Ruth was a full-time pitcher to start his career, amassing a winning percentage of .671 and was a perfect 3-0 in World Series play. Of course, his trade to the Yankees in 1920 provided what many attribute as the ascension of the Pinstripes while the "cursed" Bosox remained without a championship for nearly a century. A gem in any condition, this issue has sold at auction for over six figures on multiple occasions, a testament to its place in baseball history.
