1916 Rose Bowl Poster
Since 1916, the Rose Bowl Game has been an annual event in Pasadena, and here's a framed poster from that second-ever "Tournament East-West football game," as it was known a century ago. Splendid in its color and condition, the framed 19x25" placard illustrates four generic players in action along with rosebushes, wreaths and such. The words trumpet: "TOURNAMENT OF ROSES NEW YEARS DAY 1916 MIDWINTER FLORAL PAGEANT FOOTBALL BROWN UNIVERSITY VS. STATE COLLEGE OF WASHINGTON (now commonly known as Washington State University) PASADENA - CALIFORNIA." A truly breathtaking piece of Americana! The Cougars wound go on to win the game, 14-0. The first game ever played in the series was so lopsided in 1902, the pageant abandoned football for 15 years before this game marked its return - and the roots of a cherished American tradition.
