1919 World Series Cincy Kid "Negro" Baseball Mascot

1919 World Series Cincy Kid "Negro" Baseball Mascot

This figural statue in chalk dates from the classic 1919 World Series and incredibly, this "mascot" is African American. He stands a cocky 8" tall on a round base inscribed "Cincy Kid" on one side and "World Series" on the other. This is one of two known to exist, however, the other known specimen was repainted in white long ago and was therefore thought to be a white boy although his features were negroid. Several teams through the years were known for these shameful but culturally fascinating black mascots, from the 1889 Spalding World Tour to this gem. While it has had some in-painting, the paint is still 95% original. One of the most interesting pieces we have offered in a long while.
