1920 Ty Cobb Fielding Type I

The great Cobb in motion. 1920 Ty Cobb Fielding Type I photo (6x8"), depicts the Hall of Famer in pursuit of a fly ball to his left. Cobb, at age 33, was in center field for the 1920 Detroit Tigers. His glove is bigger than early Twentieth Century models, but still has unconnected fingers and no web. No wonder players were supposed to catch with two hands. The Tigers finished in seventh place that season, but Cobb was still a threat, hitting .334. Photo is remarkably clear. Does exhibit scratch marks in top right and some very slight creasing and slight paper loss on top right. Otherwise, very good condition.

Fine assemblage of fresh to the market Ty Cobb ephemera. Recently discovered in the Boston area, it includes some of the finer signed photographs we have seen in all our years and some beautiful Type I photographs aq well. We believe this came from something of an industrial source and they were likely used for some publishing venture or perhaps even a card set which was never completed (more cards of this era were created in the New England area versus any other). These fine pieces will also seen in future Lelands auctions incuding a wonderful image of the classic Ty Cobb “Sliding” photograph by Charles Conlon.
