1921 New York Yankees Team Panoramic Photograph - Gifted & Signed by Carl Mays w/Supporting Photos & Letter
This panoramic photograph is 100% original and originally belonged to Carl Mays, the only pitcher to ever kill an opponent with a pitch, and was given to his friend Frank Dillard in 1921. Impossible to miss in the front row is a smiling Babe Ruth, and the picture is labeled from the studio "New York Yankees Training At Shreveport LA Mch 10 1921." There is a circa 1921 period autograph by Mays on the bottom and there are some minor edge cracks and tears that do not at all diminish the impact of this majestic piece, which measures 27x8".Arrows pointing to Ruth, Mays, and Wally Schang were added to the bottom border by Dillard and amazing contrast highlights this early image of Ruth following his rookie year. Photographer cartouche reads "Photo by MC Maybery for Max Autrey Company, Shreveport LA," and it is inscribed, "Very sincerely Carl W Mays."Other great items included with this lot are: 12 snapshot photos of Mays' hunting dogs, one with prey in mouth; announcement for birth of daughter "Betty Jane Mays" signed by Carl and all writing by him is postmarked from NY, 1934. There's also a heartfelt three-page handwritten letter on his personal New York Life Insurance stationery to Dillard and wife "Freddie," announcing the death of his wife, as he is clearly crushed and goes into great detail.Although he won over 200 career games, Mays is best remembered for the pitch that resulted in the death of Ray Chapman on August 16, 1920, and largely owing to that incident, Mays was the most disliked player in baseball.
