Out of this world image of the great Iron Horse leaning against the stands with his trusty bat in hand. Luminous matte tapestry finish, this is a classic image and is one of the finest (if not THE finest) ever created of Larrupin' Lou. Obtained from the estate of Joe McCarthy it is signed in mintest black fountain pen ink "To Babe and Joe: May I always be worthy of your friendship. Lou Gehrig." Unfortunately this was not signed by Lou but was ghost signed by his wife Eleanor. It may have been signed during his illness although there is a 1938 date in pencil on the back of the frame (?). Most interestingly, the wife of his manager Joe McCarthy is "Babe" which further adds to the atmosphere of this piece. Obtained from the Joe McCarthy Estate along with several other pieces in the mid-1980s in a much heralded deal in the Upstate New York region. Still in the original frame (it has never been taken out) yet appears to be as close to mint as you can get. Comes with 11x14" vintage photograph of Joe McCarthy holding this very piece (plus supporting newspaper articles).
