1927 Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig "In A Crowd" Real Photo Postcard
Splendid 1927 real photo postcard of Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig in Sportsman's Park, St. Louis. The postcard is reminiscent of the bedazzling "Babe Ruth In A Crowd" photograph which brings huge prices. In this example, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig stand head and shoulders above the gathering crowd of youngsters from the St. Louis area. Many of the children are Boy Scouts and are dressed in their Baden-Powell inspired regalia. The contrast and clarity of the photo is an amazing and masterful example of a Type I. In excellent condition, SGC has authenticated the postcard and assigned a technical grade of 20 (1.5 Fair) due to writing on the reverse concerning the photo event. Many would consider the reverse notes a plus rather than a grade detractor. The reverse reads: "Notice the value of this card can not be estimated. If lost please return to Byron Oglesby Salem Illinois. Picture taken at Sportsman's Park St. Louis 1927. St Louis Browns 4 vs. Yankees 14. Herman Babe Ruth Lou Gehrig Both hit home runs. Salem. Flora. 1UKA. Carlyle Scouts Bob Hancock". Interestingly, the game score listed occurred on 8/27/27 with Ruth going 2-4 with a home run and a triple while Gehrig went 1-4 with a double-not a home run! An unbelievably scarce postcard and the first we have seen.
