1927 Bustin' Babes and Larrupin Lou's Oversized Photograph
This splendid photo showcasing one-third of the famous "Murderer's Row" lineup is still housed in its original frame, looking exactly as it did when it hung in the office of Christy Walsh. Its contrast and clarity are near perfect, with a one-inch tear on the right side and some minor white spotting. An inset at the top reads: "BABE RUTH - LOU GEHRIG BARNSTORM TOUR 1927 CHRISTY WALSH MANAGEMENT 22 GAMES - 21 CITIES - 7800 MILES - 220,000 ATTENDANCE." In short, this is one of the finest photos we have handled and comes directly from Walsh's office. The tour commenced two days after the conclusion of the World Series, which saw one of the greatest baseball teams ever - the iconic '27 Yankees - sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The tour, which prompted school closings and mob-like crowds across the country - began in Providence, RI and culminated in Los Angeles. Barnstorming tours were common in the Ruth era as a way for big-name players to cash in on their popularity. Ruth actually matched his $70,000 salary from the Yankees on the trip. Framed size 11x14.
