1931 Max Schmeling -Young Stribling Heavyweight Championship Site Poster

1931 Max Schmeling -Young Stribling Heavyweight Championship Site Poster

There is neither mention of race nor nationality -- just a title fight between two men hitched to stars on this vintage 22 x 29" on-site poster. The combatants, champ Max Schmeling of Germany and American challenger Young Stribling of Georgia, appear on the thin side in this understated promotion. It's in excellent shape with a two-inch tear at the top, wrinkling near "Max" and some peeling at lower left. The orange and blue are still vibrant and very unusual graphically for a boxing poster of this or any other time. Schmeling, still a few years away from becoming a Hitler pawn in his battles against Joe Louis, stopped Stribling in the fifth round before 35,000 fans. The fight is believed to be the first-ever event at Cleveland Stadium, putting extra punch into the value of this onsite brawler.
