1932 Chicago Bears World Championship Fob
Presented is what might possibly be the earliest Chicago Bears World Championship presentation piece: a watch fob issued to team trainer Andy Lotshaw to commemorate the club's 1932 NFL title. This is the not only the first example of this rare presentation piece we have ever handled, but the only one we have seen. 1932 marked the Bears' second NFL Championship and we are not aware of any presentation pieces dating from the club's first league Championship in 1921 (the team was known as the Staleys at the time). The gold-colored fob, which is designed in the shape of a football, features the head of bear in relief resting upon the dividing line between two panels. The engraved lettering on a banner above the bear reads "Worlds Champion 1932." The engraved team name, "Bears," appears on a banner below the Bear's head. Engraved lettering on the two opposite panels reads, respectively, "Andy Lotshaw" and "Trainer." Lotshaw was the longtime trainer for both the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. He started with the Bears during the club's 1920 inaugural season and joined the Cubs three years later. He remained with both clubs until retiring at the age of seventy-two in the fall of 1952. He died just a few months later. The Bears won the 1932 NFL title in unique fashion. At the time, the league champion was determined by best winning percentage, minus ties. Both the Bears and Portsmouth Spartans finished the season with identical 6-1 records (not including ties) and the league mandated that an extra game be played to determine the league winner. The game was scheduled to be played at Wrigley Field in Chicago, but inclement weather forced the game to be played indoors, on a truncated field, at Chicago Stadium. The Bears prevailed in the game 9-0 to win their second league title. Because the game was so well received by fans, the NFL decided to reorganize the league into two divisions and schedule an annual title game each season beginning the following year. The fob measures one-inch in length and displays a few light scratches. In Excellent condition overall.
