1934 Tour of Japan Scrapbook

1934 Tour of Japan Scrapbook

Compiled after the 1934 Tour of Japan, this scrapbook documents the single most important event leading to baseball becoming a favorite sport of the country. Led by Babe Ruth, the star-studded American contingent was met with raucous crowds in the "Land of the Rising Sun," where they squared off against a team that would eventually become the Yomiuri Tokyo Giants. The Babe stole the show during the 18-game exhibition, slugging 13 home runs and in the process becoming as much a mythic figure to the Japanese as he already was back home. Unsurprisingly, Ruth is featured prominently in the book, especially along with teammate Lou Gehrig. The team also included Charlie Gehringer, Jimmie Foxx, and Moe Berg, and 9/61 pages are filled with Japanese newspaper clippings of the tour.
