1938 Babe Ruth Hitting Contest Broadside (8x18”)

1938 Babe Ruth Hitting Contest Broadside (8x18”)

1938 St. Louis Broadside advertised “Double Header - Cardinals vs. Brooklyn at Sportsman’s Park - Sunday, July 24th.” Most important is what is captioned below: “Also Long Distance Hitting Contest [with] Ruth, Medwick and Others.” Below this caption is a photo of Brooklyn Dodgers coach, Babe Ruth wearing Brooklyn Dodgers uniform and first baseman’s glove. To the left is a photo of Joe Medwick swinging a bat. Ruth was hired by Brooklyn as a first base coach in June of 1938. He coached only for that season and was let go. This was the closest the Babe ever came to his dream of managing a ball club. What a great piece of advertising! Rare to say the very least and in very nice display condition. All print is bold with virtually no fading whatsoever. The edge of the paper is a different color than the rest, as this once sat in matting within a frame. The rest of the paper is toned to a light brown color. Best is what is printed at bottom: “As an accommodation for out patrons the Illinois Terminal Railroad ticket agent, at your station, will obtain choice reserved seat tickets for any Cardinal game at St. Louis, at box office prices.” Two small 1.5” pieces of tape on the verso were used to hold together two small tears, and one large piece of tape across one of the horizontal folds where it was partially separated. Technically VG, but appears EX.
