1938 Negro League All-Star Game Oversized Photograph
Original presentation display photograph (10.5x14") of the Negro League East-West All-Star game East Squad team taken on August 21, 1938, at Comiskey Park. Each player is wearing his respective Negro League team uniform and features Hall of Famers Buck Leonard, Willie Wells, Oscar Charleston and Biz Mackey along with standouts Sam Bankhead, Wild Bill Wright and Edsall Walker. The East lost the 1938 All-Star game to the West, and their Hall of Fame pitcher Hilton Smith, by a score of 5-4. The photo is captioned in white lettering in a box in the lower left, "Sixth Annual East-West Ball Game, West 5 East 4, August 21, 1938 - Attendance 30,000. Comiskey Park - Chicago, ILL." These large-format display photographs were presented to each player on the team and there aren't many surviving examples. Extraordinary photo quality, tremendous detail with incredibly bold contrast. Excellent condition besides a few stains and a few minor spots of paper loss. Beautifully framed to dimensions of 18x21".
