1941 Creation of the Philadelphia-Pittsburgh Eagles Contract
Contract drawn up by the Pittsburgh Steelers finalizing the zany merger between the Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles on April 2, 1941. Art Rooney's signature appears twice, once as president of the "Pittsburgh Pirates" (as the team was still legally known, though they had begun play on the field in 1940 as the Steelers), once as secretary of the newly merged "Pitt-Phil Steelers-Eagles" (aka "Steagles"), while Eagles co-owner Bert Bell -- named as the coach, though he never actually coached the Steagles, which didn't begin play until 1943 -- also signed as team secretary, under his full name "deBenneville Bell." Had the arrangement stuck, NFL history surely would have changed radically, since Bell went back to the Eagles and subsequently was named NFL Commissioner in '46. All 3 signatures in black fountain pen are NRMT as are the pages of this important document, which at 8 pages is 5 pages longer than the Eagles' version of the contract (offered separately in thus auction) and contains even more legal minutiae. Condition of the contract is EX-MT and the sigs are Mint.
