1941 Jacksonville Red Caps Original Negro League Negatives
Important never before seen images important in both baseball and American civil history. There are a total of __ negatives here including individual players, groups of players, and team pictures. Each are 4x5” in their original envelope. The “Porters” were actual bellboy/porters and other hotel employees that worked during their down time at Jacksonville Florida hotels and played ball for these top hotel teams. Actually, this Jacksonville team were previously the mighty Negro American League Cleveland Bears (1939). On the one hand, they are a perfect amalgam of being able to play top Negro League ball (tough not in the major leagues) and having to be a subservient porter for a living. Sadly, being a porter was considered “good work” in those days for an African American even for s baseball star who would today be making mil;lions. “White” major leaguers also took jobs in the off season; just check the back of some old Topps baseball cards. This is as opposed to many MLers today that do little i the off season but count their money and carouse, which sometimes leads into mischief. This of course runs all gamuts including race.
