1948 Babe Ruth Clock Radio

1948 Babe Ruth Clock Radio

The Babe's exploits glued fans to their radios in the '20s and '30s -- a prime factor in makiing that medium boom -- and for a time he even hosted his own radio program. Thus, this magnificent, incredibly rare wooden based bronze clock is a perfectly fitting tribute to the first king of all media. The most famous and collectible of the early clock radio line produced by the Abbotwares company (similar pieces with just the clock alone are worth something like 10 times less), it features a winsome 5" inch bust of Ruth mounted along the top -- seemingly looking downward from that great high-frequency perch in the sky -- between two bronzed baseballs, one of which is inscribed "Lifetime 714 Home Runs" and the other "One Season 60 Home Runs." The electric clock, situated directly under the bust within a golden veneer, shows hours, minutes, and seconds in a rotary display, between two rotary knobs, one for the frequency and one for the volume and on/off. (Neither the clock nor the radio are operational.) These clocks, produced after Ruth's death in 1948, were the top prize offered in various punch board games and promimently displayed in bars and taverns at the time. Today, they remain an extremely desirable showpiece highly coveted by collectors of baseball memorabilia and pre-digital and microchip Americana, with undeniable history and display appeal. The wood base is approx. 5 x 12" and at its height at the top of Ruth's cap, the piece stands 11" high. Minimal wear and a pleasant, even rime of tarnishing throughout. Slight chip on one of the knobs. Piece has been partially restored and is in excellent condition overall.
