This terrific gridiron keepsake is incredibly rare and desirable, especially for those that collect novelty radios. Manufactured by Empire in Amarillo, Texas in 1948, we have only ever seen two and never in metallic green. Made of heavy grade enamel painted aluminum, with a decal on the front that reads "Gridiron Radio" and the back "Gridiron Radio Manufactured by Empire" with an Amarillo address and Patent Number 145800, this is a large radio. The football-shaped green painted piece is approximately 14" long and the ivory colored base is 10". On either side of the leather ties are plastic resin dials similar to bakelite on one side to change the volume and the other the radio channel. The piece is quite heavy and beautifully constructed.
