Joe Black, Junior Gilliam, Davidson, Pearson, Byrd, Wilmore, Romby, Hayes, Walker, Davis, Locket, Kimbro, Harris, Butts & HOFer Leon Day. What talent on this club! HOFer Leon Day was a star both as a pitcher and as a shortstop. Pitcher Joe Black was the 1952 Rookie of the Year for the Brooklyn Dodgers and Junior Gilliam was the 1953 Rookie of the year, also for the Dodgers. Because of the popularity of African-American players starring in the Major Leagues, many fans of Negro League baseball began to focus on the Major Leagues, and the Baltimore Elite Giants began losing money and went out of existence after the next (1950) season.
