1949 Mickey Mantle Vintage Multi-Signed High School Yearbook
Easily among the finest pre-fame pieces of Mantle memorabilia to surface in the collector's market. It seems that the Commerce High graduate who owned this yearbook was quite well acquainted with the future Yankee superstar, as the fascinating leather-bound volume is signed not one, not two, not three, but four(!) times in young Mickey's NRMT hand. Perhaps this is not so surprising, actually, as he is listed as "Most Popular" above one of his many photos. His individual senior class photo is signed "Mick Chas.," as is the shot of him as a member of the varsity basketball team. His football photo is signed "Mick Mantle," while his boyish inscription on the autograph page at back reads, "To a very well liked girl in Commerce H.S., Mick Chas. Mantle." There are no fewer than eleven photographs that feature the handsome young lad, ranging from sports to the school paper to the drama society. A couple are basketball action shots. Short of the lightest bit of age-toning typical of all half-century old volumes, condition is remarkable. No staining, no tearing, no loose pages. A spectacular find from the Comet's days in Commerce.
