1951 Bobby Thomson Game Used World Series Bat

1951 Bobby Thomson Game Used World Series Bat

The air still charged with the excitment generated by his ‘Shot Heard ‘Round the World,” Bobby Thompson picked up this bat and got ready to dig in against the New York Yankees in the Fall Classic. The year was 1951. The New York Giants had just finished off the Brooklyn Dodgers to capture the National League Pennant in the final game of a three-game playoff. It was a magic summer for the Giants. Thomson led the way hitting 31 homers with 102 RBIs to help the G-Men catch the Brooklyn Dodgers, who had held a 13-game lead on Aug. 11. It was not the last comeback of the season for the scrappy team, who faced certain defeat on October 3. As Duke Snider and Jackie Robinson watched from the field and Willie Mays stood in the on-deck circle, Thomson’s line drive into the left field stands off Dodger pitcher Ralph Branca sailed out of the Polo Grounds, giving the Giants an improbable 5-4 victory and leading to Russ Hodge’s chill-inducing “The Giants Win the Pennant. The Giants Win the Pennant. The Giants Win the Pennant.” That bat is in the Hall of Fame. This bat, used just days later by Thomson in the World Series, can be in your collection. It’s a gorgeous Hillerich and Bradsby Model R16. You can run your fingers over the barrel, where ‘THOMSON’ is burned in block letters along with ‘WORLD SERIES 1951 NEW YORK GIANTS.’ This rich, textured 35-inch bat is one of only two made by H & B for Thomson to use in the World Series. In a nod to his prodigious power, the bat shows use but is uncracked. It does have dead wood on the back of the barrel with a few chips from the frozen ropes that Thomson was known for hitting. A historian’s dream, a bat that can be linked directly to that miracle season in 1951 when the New York Giants made the impossible seem ordinary.
