1954 Journal American Near-Set (58/59 Cards)
Near-set of 58 of the 59 possible cards, missing only Jim Hearn for completion. In 1954, The Journal American newspaper, published by the Hearst Company, issued a set of 59 cards, with one card being distributed at newsstands with each newspaper purchased. Each 2x4" card has a serial number along the bottom, which corresponded with numbers published in the paper, and if a customer matched numbers, they received cash winnings. The set consists of players from the three New York teams, the Yankees, Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers, who were annual representatives to the Fall Classic, and as such, this set is full of Hall of Famers including Willie, Mickey and The Duke. Includes: Bauer (EX/MT), Berra (EX), Campanella (VG/EX), Ford (VG/EX), Gilliam (VG), Hodges (GD/VG), Irvin (GD/VG), Mantle (VG/EX), Mays (VG/EX), Reese (EX), Rizzuto (VG), Robinson (EX), Snider (EX), Wilhelm (EX/MT). Grades mostly VG to EX, some lesser and a few better.
