1956 Ed Walsh Old Timer's Day Sterling Silver Tray

1956 Ed Walsh Old Timer's Day Sterling Silver Tray

Rare sterling-silver presentation tray issued to Hall of Fame pitcher Ed Walsh for his participation in the 1956 New York Yankees Old Timers' Day, held at Yankee Stadium on August 25th. Walsh was one of the greatest pitchers of the dead-ball era and his lifetime ERA of 1.82 remains the lowest mark ever recorded. He is also one of only two modern-day pitchers to win 40 or more games in a season, a feat he accomplished in 1908. Needless to say, "Big Ed" Walsh had few peers on either roster when he took the field that day. Walsh died in 1959, so this was most likely one of, if not the last such event he ever attended. The decorative tray features an engraving of Yankee Stadium in the center, below which is the engraved name "Ed Walsh." The engraved lettering along the top of the tray reads "Old Timers' Day/Honoring Veteran White Sox and Yankee Stars/Yankee Stadium August 25, 1956." Walsh was seventy-five years old at the time and, ironically, never played in Yankee Stadium during his career. He retired in 1917, which was six years before Yankee Stadium was even built. The New York Yankees' annual Old Timers' Day game began in 1947, and is the longest-running and most famous Old Timers' Day event in the Major Leagues. Player souvenirs from the contest, especially early examples presented to players of Walsh's stature, are rare and have always been highly valued by collectors. The tray (12 inches in diameter), which is stamped "Wallace Sterling 6616 12in." on the reverse, displays several light scratches and is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall.
