1961-62 Red Kelly Toronto Maple Leafs Game Worn Jersey

1961-62 Red Kelly Toronto Maple Leafs Game Worn Jersey

Red Kelly was a unique player, versatile and talented enough to be one of the National Hockey League's best defensemen early in his career and a high-scoring center at the end. The red-haired gentleman was cool and calculating on the ice and never swore, but there was no doubt about his ability to take care of himself. He had been a championship boxer at Toronto's St. Michael's College, skills the four-time winner of the Lady Byng Trophy wouldn't often display during his 20-year NHL career. Kelly was an All-Star for eight consecutive seasons with the Red Wings, six times on the First Team, and won the Lady Byng Trophy three times. In 1954 he was chosen as the first recipient of the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the outstanding defenseman in the league. Eventually he had a falling out with Detroit management and landed in Toronto, where he was converted to a center. In his first full year with the Leafs, Frank Mahovlich played on his left and set a team record with 48 goals, many of them due to Kelly's playmaking skills. One year later, the Maple Leafs celebrated its first of four Stanley Cup championships while Red Kelly was in Toronto. From that first Red Kelly Leafs Stanley Cup season, we offer this vintage heavy wool sweater which is one of the nicest we have ever seen. There is solid use in the form of sweat stains and some light pilling inside but in overall outstanding, lasting condition. No moth holes that are usually seen on sweaters this old. Colors throughout are bright and vibrant. The Maple Leafs blue practically jumps off the sweater. Tie front neck. All original with Doug Laurie Sports tag sewn inside. A perfect wool sweater from a brilliant Hall of Famer. Was this the jersey that Red wore in the Stanley Cup Finals? Wow!
