1964 Topps Giants Hoard (2,046)
The first Topps postcard size issue was the 1964 Topps Giants. Popular with collectors since its inception, the set of 1964 Giants includes 60 cards, with up-close photos in a large, unobtrusive format. This set is one of the primary reasons for PSA to begin grading large format cards. Comprised of stars and superstars of the day, the set contains 19 Hall of Famers including Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Koufax, Clemente, Kaline, Yaz, B. Robinson, F. Robinson, Gibson, Spahn, Ford, Killebrew, Cepeda, Bunning, Fox, Marichal, B. Williams and Aparicio. The set contains seven short-printed (SP) cards: #3 Koufax, 28, 42, 45, 47, 51 Mays and 60, which have made the assembly of complete sets very difficult. The Giants are also very popular with autograph collectors, who like the large format for their signatures. This grouping contains 2,046 cards, grading at 85% NRMT to NM-MT, 15 % EX to EX-MT condition. Those lower graded examples are primarily due to less than desirable centering and light print spots (“snow”). A total of five complete sets could be made, with limited counts on all the single printed examples. Total counts include: #3 Koufax SP (5), 7 Ford (36), 10 Bunning (31), 11 Clemente (42), 12 Kaline (85), 13 Fox (25), 25 Mantle (49), 28 SP (6), 29 F. Robinson (28), 31 Spahn (49), 37 Marichal (37), 38 Killebrew (70), 39 Aparicio (45), 41 Gibson (33), 42 SP (6), 45 SP (7), 48 Yaz (47), 49 Aaron (27), 50 Brooks Robinson (50), 51 Mays SP (5), 52 B. Williams (25), 55 Cepeda (49), 58 Santo (46), 60 Skowron SP (5). The remaining numbers have a somewhat equal distribution of counts, with a low of 23 to a high of 46. This hoard derives from an old-time collector, who had a special fondness for this issue, purchasing these cards directly from Topps in 1964. A case can be made that the 1964 Topps Giants are severely undervalued, given the quantity of stars, and HOFers, plus the scarcity of those cards relative to Topps’ standard issues. This large accumulation of 1964 Topps Giants, now coupled with PSA grading these attractive cards, makes for a very interesting opportunity for the dealer or enterprising collector.
