1971 Walt Alston Game Worn Jersey
While baseball was switching to doubleknits, the 1971 Dodgers clung to their storied past with gray flannel on the road. Manager Walt Alston's game-worn jersey boasts the sweat stains around the collar and arm pits of a taciturn man who roiled inside. Imagine having Dick Allen on your team and losing the West Division by a game. Laundry-shrunken letters and numbers, and slight discolorations indicate heavy use. That season's uniform does not feature names on the back, but boasts simple adornments that still look fabulous: the blue and white pinstriping around the collar and piping down the shoulders; the elegant Dodgers script sweeping across the chest and Alston's No. 24 in red felt underneath. But the best touch of all is "Alston 71" embroidered in blue above the hem as if his mother did it.
