Dennis Sobchuk was chosen 89th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 after amassing 416 points in three years with the Regina Pats of the WCJHL. Sobchuk opted to sign with the WHA's Phoenix Roadrunners and scored 32 goals as a rookie pro in 1974-75. Then came two and a half years with the Cincinnati Stingers and a personal best 44 goals in 1976-77.
