1977 Muhammed Ali vs. Earnie Shavers 11x14" PSA Type I Photograph
Presented is a Type I photograph from Time Inc. of Muhammad Ali fighting in the second-to-last boxing match he ever won, on Sept 29, 1977, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Ali was 35 years old and essentially over the hill when he boxed fellow heavyweight Ernie Shavers that night. Shavers was 33 years old himself, but Ali's skills had aged faster, yet Ali reached back for his youthful days one final time to defeat Shavers. Displayed is a vivid 11x14" photo that presents Ali not in his prime, but as a heavier, older fighter battling to extend his career. Shavers clearly hurt Ali in the second round, but the crafty Ali feigned being more hurt than he actually was, making Shavers believe that Ali was faking his injury, so Shavers never aggressively moved in to finish the weakened Ali. The fight went the full 15 rounds, and Ali won on a unanimous decision. Sports Illustrated writer Pat Putnam described the brilliance of Ali that night: "But to me the fifteenth round against Shavers was as magnificent as any round Ali ever fought...." After boxing Shavers, Ali had only four more professional fights: He fought Leon Spinks twice in 1978, losing the first and winning the second. Then in 1980 Ali was defeated by Larry Holmes and in 1981 Ali lost his final professional fight, to Trevor Berbick. The photo comes with a PSA/DNA LOA. The offered photo captures an older Ali, a "lion in winter," using his wits and experience to defeat Shavers in the twilight of his career. The gripping photo comes with a PSA/DNA LOA.
