1978-79 Mark Messier WHA Cincinnati Stingers Contract
Talk about making your mark. Mark Messier was celebrating his 18th birthday when he was presented with his rookie contract. The WHA Cincinnati Stingers signed him as a free agent for the 1978-79 season during which he played in 47 games. But he didn’t play until he signed. This rookie contract is an original that was sent to the WHA offices. It was a two-parter. The standard WHA contract is signed by Messier along with the signatures of a Stingers official and two witnesses, one of which is Mark’s Mom, Mary Jean Messier. There are also three MM’s--Mark Messier initials --on the contract. The second part of the contract discusses the options, the bonuses, addresses questions about injury, etc. and is clearly signed by Messier. There are an additional two MM initials by Messier along with two witnesses, including again Mary Jean. This rookie contract set the stage for the career of a player who became known as much for his leadership abilities as he was for his goal-scoring technique and toughness. He went on to become of the NHL’s leading scorers. But it all started with a contract--this contract. What a great way for you to make your memorabilia mark.
