1978 Pete Rose 44-Game Hitting Streak Ends Ticket Stub PSA VG 3 (Highest Graded)

"You'd be surprised how many shortcomings can be overcome by hustle," said Pete Rose, otherwise known as "Charlie Hustle." And hustle Rose did, as he used good ability and terrific desire to amass 4,256 hits, the all-time most in the history of baseball. But the offered item, a rain check stub to the August 1, 1978, game in which the home team Atlanta Braves defeated Rose's Cincinnati Reds by a score of 16-4 at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, is not about one of the thousands of games in which Rose did get a hit, but about one particular game in which he didn't - the game in which Rose's National League record tying 44-game consecutive game hitting streak came to an end. On the day before, also against the Braves in the same stadium, Rose faced famed knuckleballer Phil Niekro. Rose hit what many deemed a fastball, past the Braves' third baseman, a diving Rod Gilbreath to extend his National League hitting streak to 44 games and tie Wee Willie Keeler's record set in 1897. Keeler was famous for attributing his success to his ability to "hit 'em where they ain't." Later, Niekro said that he didn't throw Rose a fastball, but rather 'a sinker that didn't sink." In the record ending game, Rose went 0-4 with a walk against Larry McWilliams and Gene Garber. Rose's final chance to extend the streak was when Garber struck Rose out in the ninth inning. Later, Rose criticized Garber for pitching him "like it was the seventh game of the world Series." Garber may or may not have been amused. He replied, "I had an idea that Pete was hitting like it was the final game of the World Series." There is some slight discoloration on the back, otherwise the ticket would be a much higher grade. As it is, the ticket stub has been encapsulated and graded PSA VG 3. This is the HIGHEST PSA example, and One of Only Two at this grade.
