19th Century Fore-Edge Baseball Painting

19th Century Fore-Edge Baseball Painting

This is one of the coolest pieces we have ever owned. A fore-edge painted book has a painting along the edges of its pages. Incredibly, this painting is baseball-themed. It is a marvelous home plate collision in full, vibrant color. This is a single fore-edge painting - the painting is along only one edge of the book. Gilt was applied after the painting dried, which makes the painting completely invisible when the book is closed. This is one of only two fore-edge painted baseball books we know to exist. The other sold for about $5,000 several years ago. The majority of extant examples of fore-edge paintings are done more recently and on reproductions of older books. This is consistent, as it is on a beautiful specimen of Oliver Goldsmith’s Prose by Clifford Irving. The condition of the book itself is EX-MT, while painting is even nicer.
