4/5/70 Louis Armonstrong ALS
Touching letter written by the jazz great late in his life, reflecting "Satchmo's" eternal optimism and good cheer. After being hospitalized, he wrote from his home in Queens, New York to a friend in Germany, Erich Kauffmann: "I am well again and feeling fine after a long good rest...with the attentions of my dear [wife] Lucille everything is beautiful again." Wanting to get back to playing his trumpet, he pleads with Kauffmann, who manufactured the lip salve Louis used, "I'll buy all that you can make...I am very serious about this. I live by your lip salve." He concluded, "God bless you. Goodnight from Satchmo." The signature is 9/10. On July 6, 1971, he died in his sleep at age 69. The 5-page letter is EX with slight browning along the edges.
