Billy Holiday Handbill 1944 Fats Waller Salute
Handbill promoting Billy Holiday’s “Salute to Fats Waller” on April 2, 1944 was the first of her several highly successful Carnegie Hall appearances. Fats Waller had died of pneumonia in December 1943. Pictured is Billy resplendent in a stunning white gown trimmed in fur on stage at the Salute. This is a famous photograph by William P. Gottlieb. This lot comes with a high quality scan but the actual vintage photograph is in a Billy Holiday lot in this auction. According to the handbill also appearing Count Basie, Teddy Wilson, Slick Jones, Paul Draper, J.C. Johnson, Art Hodges, Mildred Bailey, Josh White, Erskine Hawkins, Frankie Newton, Jimmy Savo, “Hot Lips” Page, Mary Lou Williams and many others. Handbill measures 10x7” and is in NRMT condition.
