6/3/75 Steve Prefontaine Memorial Program Card
Presented is a program from the Steve Prefontaine memorial Service on June 3, 1973, held at Haywood Field, University of Oregon, in Eugene Oregon. Prefontaine was a hugely successful long-distance runner who set records in every distance between 2,000 and 10,000 meters. Prefontaine had a large following and he and other runners of the time helped create the "running boom" of the '70s. Prefontaine was expected to medal at the 1972 Olympics, but he finished fourth - an immense disappointment for him. Prefontaine died in a car accident. One of the speakers at the service was Bill Bowerman, his coach at the University of Oregon and one of the founders of Blue-Ribbon Sports - later called Nike. Two movies were eventually made about Prefontaine. When he ran, the popular Prefontaine was often cheered by his many fans as they chanted "Pre! Pre! Pre!" This consignor is from Eugene, Oregon and was a huge Pre fan. She would take her family to Hayward Field to watch him race. Being a resident of the area, she attended the memorial service and kept the service memorial card in memory of him.
