A Pair of 1869 Cincinnati "Buckeyes" Baseball Club Passes, Played the Red Stockings Twice! (2)
An incredible pair of passes from the Buckeye Baseball Club of Cincinnati, from that most magical of baseball seasons, 1869. The "Buckeyes" were, along with the Live Oaks and the Red Stockings among the first organized baseball teams in Cincinnati. Organized in 1866, the "Buckeyes" were natural home rivals of the Cincinnati Red Stockings, with whom they clashed in two bouts during the watershed season of 1869. On July 22, 1869 the Red Stockings crushed the "Buckeyes" 71 to 15 in 5 innings and a little over a month later, on August 31, 1869, the Red Stockings defeated them 103 to 8. It was the Red Stockings highest total of runs against any opponent in 1869. The offered passes represent what is perhaps the only pair of passes to 1869 Red Stockings games extant. Both passes are printed on a lavender colored cardboard with the date "1869" emblazoned upon them, and admit the bearer "And Lady" to all games of the "B.B.C." The backs of the passes are handnumbered "30" and "125" respectively, and are both signed by "B.O.M. DeBeck, Treasurer". According to Harry Ellard's "Base Ball in Cincinnati", B.O.M. DeBeck played third base for the 1866 "Buckeyes", and must have later become an executive with the club. The passes are accompanied by a letter written in the 1957 by DeBeck's son, "In destroying some very old papers of my fathers, I found the enclosures. If your not interested, you may know some one who will be; some one who is interested in the early history of baseball - amateur and professional - in this area. Yours truly, B.O.M DeBeck (my name is the same as my father's who countersigned these tickets)." Both passes are in incredible condition considering both their age and rarity. There are no creases, and the color and printing are remarkably vibrant.
